Text
Mei Lin and the Reunion Dinner
Mei Lin and her mother are happily decorating their house in preparation for Chinese New Year. However, when her mother realizes that Mei Lin has accidentally eaten up all the traditional "love letters" (kue semprong), she sends Mei Lin over to her grandmother's (Nai Nai) house to bake a fresh batch. Through this heartwarming journey, Nai Nai teaches Mei Lin how to mix coconut milk, eggs, sugar, and flour to create the perfect batter using a special traditional mold. As they cook together, Mei Lin helps prepare the steamboat ingredients and arranges the colorful items for yu sheng (tossed raw fish salad). Through this story, young readers are introduced to traditional Chinese festive dishes and the meaningful customs behind the Lunar New Year reunion dinner.
